It is where you go when you get the letter saying: Flee, all is discovered. It is where you go when you are told that you are a bubble on the tide of empire. It is where you go to grow up with the country. It is where you go to spend your old age. Or it is just where you go. This is how Jack Burden, the corrupted idealist in Robert Penn Warren’s All the Kings Men, described his predicament as he drove to California in an existential fever-dream with his life imploding around him. These lines were constantly on my mind last summer as I made my own journey West under much happier circumstances. Setting out on a journey into an unknown future is complicated. There are things we hope to find up ahead, and things we hope to leave behind, and things we’re just not sure about. This is the tricky problem when we hear stories of call - and stories of sending like last Sunday’s Gospel from Matthew 9. We would like them to follow what we in modern society think of as the default path of time: an upward trajectory of success, the moving staircase of progress and human history. It's easy to think of answering God’s call to us in terms of a forward springing into action. And last Sunday’s Gospel might suggest this: “Go proclaim the Good News,” Jesus says, and they do it. “Don’t plan ahead, don’t pack a bag, just go!” It’s a story of a heroic level of faith and trust. Our paths aren’t quite so straightforward, and indeed we don’t know what was going through the disciples’ heads when they heard Jesus’ words either. We know what they did in the end, but we don’t know if they had second thoughts they kept to themselves. We don’t know if they were wondering where they would find the courage to start. If Jesus was sending me out on an unknown, perilous journey, I suspect I might have a reaction more like that of St. Augustine of Canterbury, the first Archbishop of Canterbury sent by Pope Gregory I in 595 AD on a mission to Britain. Daunted by the magnitude of the task and the fierce reputation of the Anglo-Saxons, Augustine and his companions turned around in Gaul and tried to return to Rome. The Pope urged them onward with letters of encouragement, and the eventual mission was a success. Much more often that not, those who dare great things for God would not have dared much of anything without the support of their community, and without the gift of the Holy Spirit. With God’s help, we can step out on our own journeys of witness, knowing that God is with us each step of the way – and knowing that we aren’t alone. Yours in Christ, |

Day Trip from London to Canterbury:

RSVP by June 28Are you going on the choir tour, or are you planning on being in London the week of the choir's residency in London? Do you want to come with Mtr. Kara to Canterbury for a day? If so, please let her know by June 28 so that she can make lunch and group tour reservations. We will be taking the train to Canterbury from London on Wednesday, August 12. The tentative schedule for the day is: 8:40: Train from London St. Pancras to Canterbury West 9:40: Arrive in Canterbury TBD: Group Tour of the Cathedral (approximately 1 hour), plus exploring and praying on your own. 12:30: Holy Eucharist Lunch within the Cathedral Precincts Visit to St. Augustine's Abbey and wandering in town 3:30 or 4-ish Return to London Note that there is a 90 percent solar eclipse at 6:17 PM BST and we hope to find a decent place in London to watch! Estimated cost including rail, tour fees, and lunch is about 65 pounds.

The Adventures of MegMeg will be away in Hartford, CT June 21-26 to serve on the faculty of the American Guild of Organists' summer camp for high school organists, called a Pipe Organ Encounter - Advanced. Meg will spend the week at Trinity College, teaching some of the country's most accomplished young organists. She will also play as part of a faculty recital on the beautiful Noack pipe organ at Sacred Heart Church in New Britain, CT on Thursday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. |

You Are HereAt some point when I was on medical leave, the Bishop pranked me by putting two Post-it notes in my office. One was attached to the plastic skeleton I keep as a monastic memento mori, a reminder of the transitory nature of life. His usual sign says “remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” to which the bishop added “but not too soon!” The other Post-it was on my wall calendar - which was a month out of date - an arrow to the correct day with the note “You are here.” The calendar of the Church works like that. It is a pointer that grounds us and tells us where we are in the story of God and God’s relationship with all of his creatures. “You are here,” in relationship with God and each other, caught up in the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. As for the Post-it, I kept it as a reminder of how the calendar of the Church orients us in time. The Internet has given us several resources to be that “You are here” marker for us in the liturgical life of the Church. Some are classics and some are very new, some are simple and some are more complicated. Here are a few for you to play with: · Lectionary Page: The classic liturgical calendar with links to the lectionary readings for Sundays and major feasts · Satucket: Contains the Daily Office and Daily Eucharistic Lectionaries, including Lesser Feasts and Fasts (the minor saints’ days) · Chris Corbin’s Ordo Calculator: The ultimate tool for calendar nerds with options for historic calendars and Anglo-Catholic customaries.
