A Time to Rest

Dear Beloved of Trinity Church,

As summer begins, I am reminded once again that life unfolds in seasons. Creation itself is built on rhythms: day and night, ebb and flow, inhaling and exhaling. The trees bud in spring, flourish in summer, shed their leaves in autumn, and rest through winter. Everywhere we look, God has woven a sacred rhythm into the fabric of creation.

Yet many of us live as though every season should be a season of striving. We move from task to task, obligation to obligation, rarely pausing long enough to notice that even God built rest into the pattern of life. Rest was not an afterthought. It was part of creation from the very beginning.

Summer offers us a gentle invitation to rediscover this rhythm. While our schedules may not completely stop, the season often brings a different pace. The days are longer, the evenings linger, and nature seems to encourage us to slow down and pay attention. Summer can be a time to exhale.

Jesus understood this rhythm. Again and again throughout the Gospels, he withdrew from the crowds, stepped away from the demands placed upon him, and sought quiet places for prayer and renewal. At one point, seeing the exhaustion of his disciples, he offered a simple invitation: "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while" (Mark 6:31).

The spiritual life is not just about doing more “God” things, but also about learning when to stop, become still, and trust. Summer invites us to embrace that holy balance. To spend time outdoors. To marinate in rich conversation. To watch a sunset. To sit quietly in prayer. To remember that God is present and lavishing us with grace in our time of rest and renewal.

As this season begins, may you find moments to breathe deeply, to slow your pace, and to rest in the assurance that you are beloved. May summer become a season of renewal for body, mind, and spirit—a time to exhale and simply be in the presence of God.

"Come away... and rest a while."

That may be one of the holiest invitations in all of Scripture.

Adult Formation Corner: It’s Embertide!

Happy Embertide! Embertide, or the Ember Days, take place four times a year. As the Episcopal Church website says the Ember Days are:

Three days which occur four times a year: the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after St. Lucy's Day (Dec. 13), Ash Wednesday, the Day of Pentecost, and Holy Cross Day (Sept. 14). The name comes from the Latin title Quattuor tempora, meaning “four times.” In ancient Italy the times (originally three) were associated with sowing, harvest, and vintage, for which one prayed, fasted, and gave alms. Later the four times became occasions for ordination, for which the Christian community prayed and the candidates prepared themselves by prayer and retreat. The BCP appoints proper collects and readings for this observance under the title “For the Ministry (Ember Days), including propers “For those to be ordained,” “For the choice of fit persons for the ministry,” and “For all Christians in their vocation” (BCP, pp. 256-257, 929).

In this season of the Pentecost or Whitsun Ember Days we have three ordinations to celebrate soon, with several more on the way later this summer!

· The Rev. Wesley Rowell, Dcn. will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests on Monday, June 8 at 7 PM Central Time (8 Eastern), at his parish in Memphis. If you’d like to watch online, see the YouTube link in the invitation or go here.

· Angela DiJoseph and Greg Geehern will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons at Trinity Cathedral in Trenton at 2 PM on Saturday, June 20. Please join us as at the Cathedral as we celebrate this wonderful occasion for Angela and Greg!

· Later this summer, the Rev. Madeline Polhill, Dcn. will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests in the Diocese of San Diego. Madeline serves as Curate at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Delmar, CA.

· Also this summer, Jane Russomano-Esmonde will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons in the Diocese of Connecticut. Jane will serve as Assistant Rector at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Lebanon, PA.

It is a joy and a privilege to walk alongside our Princeton Theological Seminary students as they prepare for the ministries to which God has called them. I hope that you will keep each of them in your prayers.

Description:

The Prosopon School of Iconology invites students of all levels to participate in the 2026 workshop. Intermediate and advanced students are invited to work on the full figure icon of Daniel in the Lions’ Den. Beginning students will work on an icon of the head and shoulders of the Prophet Daniel. Each day of the workshop will begin with an iconological discussion relating to these subjects and of the liturgical steps of the process, using the Prosopon method. Practical instructions and demonstrations will follow. The Prosopon School teaches the ancient method of painting with egg tempera and water-based gilding. Step by step instructions will include discussions about the symbolism of the process.
