The Other Triduum

This weekend, western Christians around the world will observe what sometimes is called the little Triduum: the three days of All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. It’s a parable or a signpost of the other triduum: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. Both of these sets of three days confront us with the truth about death and resurrection. The Triduum of All Saints is about our death and resurrection, and the Triduum of Easter is about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is his death and resurrection that makes our resurrection possible.

If we look at historical and contemporary debates, there have been a lot of words spilled on the relationship between All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. What does it mean on All Saints’ Day that we celebrate the saints? What does it mean that All Souls’ Day is also called the commemoration of all the faithful departed? A more Catholic approach would say that the saints are special examples of holiness that have been recognized as such by the church. All Souls’ Day, then, is for all of us faithful who die in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection.

A more Protestant understanding might follow the logic of Martin Luther, who says that we are all sinners and yet we are all equally saints redeemed by the cross of Christ. As the famous hymn goes, “there’s not any reason, not in the least, that I shouldn't be one too.” But regardless of which theological position you take, the message of this week is simple: resurrection. This weekend we remember those who have joined the company of faithful departed before us, and perhaps we will meditate on our own mortality as well. But above all, I hope that you will remember God’s “yes” to you, spoken at Easter that is good news for each one of you.

Thanks to everyone that came out Monday night for our First Annual Blessing of the Costumes! We’re so grateful to the 50+ people who joined us. Everyone looked fantastic in their costumes. A special thanks to parade marshal, Miss Catherine, Joseph Ferguson for the organ music, and Father Paul for hosting the final stop of the parade at the Rectory.

Please note that there will be no Sunday School this Sunday due to our Church Family Breakfast . Additionally, instead of Children's Chapel, there will be a children's sermon during the 10:30 worship service.

Adult Formation Corner

Do you need an excuse to eat doughnuts? If you do, All Saints' Day is a perfect time for them. If you don't believe me, believe the Catholic Education Resource Center:

[Trick or treating] grew from an ancient English custom of knocking at doors to beg for a "soul cake" in return for which the beggars promised to pray for the dead of the household. Soul cakes, a form of shortbread — and sometimes quite fancy, with currants for eyes — became more important for the beggars than prayers for the dead, it is said. Florence Berger tells in her Cooking for Christ a legend of a zealous cook who vowed she would invent soul cakes to remind them of eternity at every bite. So she cut a hole in the middle and dropped it in hot fat, and lo — a doughnut. Circle that it is, it suggests the never-ending of eternity. Truth or legend, it serves a good purpose at Halloween.

The refrains sung at the door varied from "a soul cake, a soul cake, have mercy on all Christian souls for a soul cake," to the later:

Soul, soul, an apple or two,
If you haven't an apple, a pear will do,
One for Peter, two for Paul,
Three for the Man Who made us all.

We've moved Pub Theology indoors as the weather continues to get colder.

Join us at 7:30 PM this Monday, and every Monday, at the Yankee Doodle Tap Room at the Nassau Inn, 10 Palmer Square.

2025 Turkey Trot

Turkey Trot is upon us. In less than four weeks, our circle will be over-run by all manner of turkey. It is a morning of fun, excitement, community, and support.

It is an opportunity to burn off some of those calories in advance of the feast to come. Our permit allows for 2500 participants.

As of today, more than 1500 registrations have been received. We have sold out in each of the last several years and almost surely will do so again in 2025. If you are interested in running, I encourage to register soon. Our website https://www.trinityturkeytrot.org.

We also have volunteer opportunities if you want to participate but don’t really want to run. Reach out to Jennifer Hayden is you would like to volunteer.

CHOIR TO LONDON

In August 2026, our choir will be on tour in the UK, first at Ely Cathedral and then at Westminster Abbey.

Trinity is putting together a trip for any parishioners who would like to support the choir while they are in London - and see the sights in London and beyond.

Whether you are a chorister parent, a spouse or friend of an adult choir member, or a Trinity parishioner who enjoys music, liturgy, and history, this trip is for you!

The tour will include day trips to Canterbury Cathedral and to Oxford, as well as activities in London itself. We will attend daily Evensong at Westminster Abbey, as well as the Sunday Eucharist at which Trinity's choir will sing.

Trinity Choir Silent Auction

The theme this year is Autumn in England, with food and cocktails curated by our own Leslie Edwards to enjoy while bidding on items and experiences.

Top lots of interest include a weekend in NYC at the Cornell Club, a festive Spanish dinner for 8, Tiffany jewelry, Nine and Dine with the Rector of Trinity Princeton, a night at the ballet with our Director of Music, and one day as honorary Police Chief of Princeton.

There are lots of great things up for auction, both small and large! Come, shop for Christmas for your loved ones, or bid on a treat for yourself, all while supporting our choirs for their upcoming tour to Westminster Abbey!

Free childcare is available (RSVP requested) for this event.

Admission is $50 per person for the auction, which includes dinner, two drinks, and dessert.

Travel to the Holy Land

A couple of years back, some members of Trinity Church traveled with our Rector, Paul Jeanes, and The Rev. Keith Marsh and to the Holy Land.

It proved to be a marvelous and spiritually uplifting experience for all who made the pilgrimage! After retiring in June of 2023, Keith started Spirited Pilgrimages, a business devoted to planning, promoting and hosting unique, small-group pilgrimages around the world for people of faith.

Two pilgrimages have been planned for the fall of next year and you are invited to join:

The Footsteps of Paul – September 9-19, 2026 – travel through Turkey and Greece by land and sea - visit sites from the Book of Acts associated with St. Paul on his missionary journeys: Ephesus, Patmos, Corinth, Athens and more, including the islands of Crete and Santorini
Celtic Christianity – October 12-24, 2026 – follow the path of Christianity’s early years in the Celtic kingdoms, beginning in Ireland and expanding into Scotland and northern England – trace the spread of Celtic Christianity from its introduction by St. Patrick to its demise at the Council of Whitby.
