Enough

Last Sunday afternoon, Deacon Greg and I traveled out to the Discovery Center at Point Breeze to learn more about the partnership between the D&R Greenway Land Trust and Christ Church Bordentown. Thanks to their spirit of cooperation and a lot of hard work by Doan Tucker and her friends, heirloom produce is turned into soups and salads that are shared with neighbors in need. It was an amazing (and delicious) lesson in what happens when we act as stewards of the abundance that we have been given - and when we share that abundance with others.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, we will hear the story of the feeding of the five thousand from Matthew. It’s a miracle that can feel almost too familiar through the retelling, and yet I think I’m going to hear it with new ears after spending that Sunday in the garden. In our culture, we are surrounded by voices saying that there isn’t enough to go around, and that the responsible thing to do is to safeguard what we have and shore up our own stores against the threat of uncertain tomorrows. The disciples didn’t think there would be enough either. They had only five loaves and two fish, after all! But through the power of God, they discovered that as they shared it, they had more than they needed - far more. The miracle came about in the sharing, in the moment, and not in a hoarding against the fear of future scarcity.

Neither loaves nor fish nor vegetables will stay fresh forever if we hide them away, even in the freezer. They are made to be shared with others. As with everything we have been given in abundance out of God’s generosity, when we give it away, we find that we have enough. What’s more, we discover that we have been blessed in the giving.

Here’s a recipe that we tried last Sunday. It’s a delicious and easy thing to do with all the tomatoes that are in season right now.

Bruschetta with Tomato

Makes about 4 servings

INGREDIENTS

4 tomatoes, roughly chopped

8 fresh basil leaves, chopped

1 tbsp flat-leaf parsley, chopped

3 garlic cloves, finely chopped, plus 1 garlic clove cut in half

Coarse salt and freshly-ground pepper

4 slices Italian or farmhouse-style bread, toasted

Additional olive oil to drizzle on top (optional)

In a medium-sized bowl, mix the tomatoes, basil, parsley, chopped garlic and olive oil together, and season with salt and pepper. Rub the toasted bread with the garlic halves, then top with equal portions of the tomato mixture. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil on top if wished, and serve immediately.

Summer Choir is in Session!

All are welcome to join us, no experience necessary. Simply be at Ivy Hall by 9 am on Sundays in July and August for rehearsal for the 10 am service. We will sing simple anthems, so it's a great opportunity to get your voice in shape!
