Rummage 2026: The 51st Annual Trinity Rummage Sale“For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9 Either love it, hate it, or simply tolerate it, rummage is here. It begins with pods in the parking lot and cars lining up to donate their no longer needed or wanted items no matter the weather. Like the post office, "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion" of taking people’s donations. Then comes the days when trolleys, wagons, grocery store shopping carts (borrowed, I presume?), and other ways to carry stuff for the process of bringing what’s in the pods into the church building. Fine men’s clothing to the second floor. Glassware, dishes, toys, fine women’s clothing and more clothing to Pierce. Artwork to the Thomas room. Jewelry finds a home in the library. “This and That” to another space upstairs. There are people all over the parish building sorting, hanging, pricing, organizing, gossiping, and preparing for the many, many people who come through our doors to find their treasure from someone’s donation. Then the sales begin. First are those who know that this is a rummage sale in Princeton, so they pay $10.00 to get first dibs on the “good stuff.” Then come others seeking something they do not know yet but will know it when they find it. Then, on Saturday comes the bargain of all bargains, 50% off. On this day, some of those most in need come through the doors looking for the necessities which they cannot afford in a store or online. All the proceeds of the weeks-long ministry are used to support organizations, local and international, that Trinity Church has partnered with. None of the proceeds go to the church. It is inspiring because many of the people sorting, organizing, and tagging are in their 80s, 70s, and some youngsters in their 60s. There are people with canes, back braces, rollators, and crutches. As they sort, they talk about their latest doctor’s appointment or who is a good podiatrist or a good pain management doctor. And of course, church gossip. Many are parishioners and some are not. Some are members of Trinity for 40 years or more and others have been here a few weeks. Some have worked on rummage for many years and for others, it is their first time. By Saturday evening, all will be gone, cleaned and ready for Sunday, thanks to these workers and our committed sextons, Enrique Ramirez and Roberto Melgoza. Holy Listening Sessions ContinueThe remaining dates and times for the sessions are below. There are two sessions remaining: one virtual and one in-person. Please only sign up for (1) session. Each session will be limited to (25) participants. Total time for each session will be 120 minutes, or 2 hours. Both tools are necessary to help us accurately capture the beauty, brilliance, challenges and opportunities at Trinity Princeton. In-person sessions will meet in Pierce-Bishop Hall. Also, the Concert Choir of Trenton Children's Chorus of Capital Harmony Works will perform the Introit on Sunday, October 25 at the beginning of the 10:30 AM service, and will join our Trinity choir in one hymn. Trenton Children's Chorus of Capital Harmony Works, is a long-time Outreach partner of Trinity Church. Capital Harmony Works offers tuition-free after-school programs focusing on youth development in a supportive environment through music and the arts. We will worship with the brothers, enjoy plenty of quiet in the monastery or exploring the beautiful grounds on the banks of the Hudson River, and spend some time in discussion as a group with Mtr. Welcoming Our Bishop This Sunday, Trinity Church will welcome Bishop Sally French to our 8 and 10:30 AM services. Her visitation to us is usually at the Easter Vigil, so it’s wonderful to have her this year on a Sunday as well. In day-to-day church life, most people don’t have much contact with the bishop or with the diocesan office, so you may wonder what bishops do when they aren’t visiting churches, and what bishops are for. Certainly, they spend a considerable amount of time on administration, taking care of the business of the diocese. But what bishops are “for” encompasses much more. The bishop is the focus of unity of the diocese, and its chief priest and pastor. In the Book of Common Prayer 1979, the service for the ordination of a bishop describes it this way: A bishop in God's holy Church is called to be one with the apostles in proclaiming Christ's resurrection and interpreting the Gospel, and to testify to Christ's sovereignty as Lord of lords and King of kings. [They] are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to ordain priests and deacons and to join in ordaining bishops; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and wholesome example for the entire flock of Christ. (p. 517) Bishop French will preach, teach the Adult Forum, and preside at the Eucharist in our parish on Sunday. In doing so, she will carry out the true heart of her role as our chief priest, pastor, and guardian of the faith. On a personal note, I have known Bishop French, her husband Clarke, and children Jack and Libby for more than a decade, as we both served in the Diocese of North Carolina before coming to New Jersey. You can read more about her here. If you haven’t met her yet, I hope you will come out and meet her on Sunday. It will be a great day for Trinity Church!
