Charles Villiers Stanford’s Evening Canticles in G are a study in economy of compositional means. Both the Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis feature a vocal solo: the former a soaring soprano solo and the latter a dramatic baritone solo. In each, the solo voice begins, with the full choir coming in at the second phrase. In the Magnificat, the organ accompaniment features a bubbling line of staccato arpeggios in the right hand, immediately conveying a sense of hopefulness and excitement. This week’s presentation of the Magnificat will feature high school treble chorister Cecilia Rowley on the soprano solo. Later in Evensong, “The eyes of all wait upon thee” by Orlando Gibbons will feature another treble chorister in a solo: middle school treble Quinn Arrington. Please come join us for Evensong this week and enjoy the beautiful singing of our treble choristers!

Adult Formation Corner: Change of Habit

“John Butler’s assistant for the years from 1951 to 1954 was Father Martin Davidson, Prior of the American College of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd and an examining chaplain of the Diocese of New Jersey. Father Davidson was in demand throughout and beyond the diocese as a leader of retreats and holy days. He always wore his black habit and was a holy man with a sense of humor.”

As Trinity’s current Associate Rector who is also an Oratorian, an examining chaplain of the Diocese of New Jersey, a leader of retreats, and a source of jokes, I am keenly aware of how much I owe to Fr. Martin Davidson. And while I won’t always wear my black habit around Trinity, it has finally arrived from England and you will probably see me wearing it sometimes, in honor of Fr. Davidson.

The habit of the Oratory is a black cassock with a black scapular (the apron-looking bit), and a special belt or “girdle” which is given at full profession. Novices like me wear a plain black belt until then. The girdle is a leather belt woven of seven strands that represent the seven Notes of the Oratory: fellowship, liberty, stewardship, labour of the mind, the love that makes for peace, discipline, and joy.

Family Ministries Corner

Thank you to everyone that stopped by our table at the Ministry Fair and ate pizza with us at the Mercer Hill Neighborhood Picnic on Sunday. We loved your enthusiasm!

At the Ministry Fair, several of you were interested in purchasing Faith Guides for Littles that were on display. You may buy it from StoryMakers NYC here.

Sunday School and Youth Group start this Sunday (details below). If you haven’t registered your child(ren), please take a few minutes to do so here. Look out for the option to register additional children on the Google form. We also will have paper registrations available in the classrooms.

Hallway Angels

• Adults that help maintain a safe environment in the education wing while offering hospitality by welcoming visitors and serving snacks to students.

Sunday School teacher

• Adults that provide presence and support in Sunday School where we explore stories of the Bible and faith practices through creativity, imagination, wonder, and play. Meets 9:30-10:20 a.m.

Youth Group leader

• Adults that can provide a positive and consistent presence for our middle and high schoolers during their faith formation journeys through fellowship, service, and learning.

Upcoming events:

9/21 Sunday School begins for grades K-2 in room 207 and grades 3-6 in room 208. Classrooms are open from 9:30-10:20 a.m.

Youth Group (middle school & high school) gathers for lunch and formation following the second service. Meet Donte outside at the church steps. Dismissal will be at 1:30 p.m.

Children’s Chapel continues to be offered during the 10:30am service.

Sacred Imagination: Art & the Bible

Wednesday Night Study Group

📍Flemer Library in Trinity Church

starting October 1st 6pm to 7 p.m.

How has art shaped the way we see the Bible? From medieval stained glass to Renaissance paintings, from icons to modern interpretations, artists across history have helped us imagine, question, and understand Scripture in new ways.

In this study, we’ll explore biblical stories and themes through the lens of visual art. Each session will pair a passage of Scripture with works of art—ancient and modern—that bring out its meaning, highlight overlooked details, and spark conversation. Together, we’ll ask: What does this artwork show us about God, humanity, and faith? How does art influence the way we understand the Bible today?

No background in art history is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to see Scripture with fresh eyes.

Pub Theology

Monday, September 22nd

Join us for Pub Theology on Monday, September 22nd, at 7:30 PM at the Ivy Inn (248 Nassau St.).

This week's Pub Theology discussion will be on humor in the Gospels, led by intern Rob Long, former writer and producer on TV's "Cheers."

This weekly discussion group is a place to bring your questions and your joys, and to share fellowship with friends new and old.

The clergy and interns will lead the discussion at the first few meetings, but once everyone gets the hang of it we will share weekly leadership roles among the group.

We will end promptly at 8:30 PM. Ivy Inn is cash-only, and you will need to order inside at the bar. If you don't have cash, there's an ATM inside as well. See you there! 

Pre-Advent Retreat Community of St. John the Baptist

Are you looking for a way to start Advent in a prayerful way? Would you like to get away from Princeton to a quiet, historic retreat center? 

Join us for a two-night pre-Advent retreat at the Community of St. John the Baptist in Mendham, NJ. We’ll spend time in prayer and reflection, as well as enjoying the community’s natural beauty. The cost for lodging and meals is $250, and we need a firm number of attendees by October 14.

CHOIR TO LONDON

In August 2026, our choir will be on tour in the UK, first at Ely Cathedral and then at Westminster Abbey.

Trinity is putting together a trip for any parishioners who would like to support the choir while they are in London - and see the sights in London and beyond.

Whether you are a chorister parent, a spouse or friend of an adult choir member, or a Trinity parishioner who enjoys music, liturgy, and history, this trip is for you!

The tour will include day trips to Canterbury Cathedral and to Oxford, as well as activities in London itself. We will attend daily Evensong at Westminster Abbey, as well as the Sunday Eucharist at which Trinity's choir will sing.

Nicaea at 1700 Conference

October 26th- 28th

2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea and the Nicene Creed. This confession of the Triune God’s nature and action in the world set the stage for the development of Christian theology and worship as we know it today. 

Trinity Church invites you to a short conference on October 26th-28th to celebrate this anniversary. The conference will include lectures, choral liturgies, food, and fellowship. It will also include a Council of Nicaea role-playing game led by the Rev. Dr. Kirsten Guidero of Marist College. The conference is intended for interested laypeople and clergy, not only for academics, so please do join us!

Nominations for Vestry 

Elections for four new vestry members will be held during the Annual Meeting on November 9th. Any baptized and confirmed parishioner who has pledged is eligible for nomination. Vestry members serve a three year term.

50th Trinity Church Rummage Sale

Countdown to Trinity Church’s 50th Rummage Sale has Begun!

October 16th-18th

Donations will be accepted on Sundays after the 10:30 am service September 14th, 21st, 28th, and October 5th.

What time? Between Noon and 12:45

Where? At the PODs in the Trinity Parking Lot

Are reservations necessary? Yes, by email rummage@trinityprinceton.org

Can you make more than one reservation?  Yes

Which donations will help put our 50th sale over the top? 

Here are some suggestions based on past sales:

Jewelry – gold earrings & charm bracelets, broches with semi & precious stones, and costume items; books; clothes for men, women and children – “better” and “bargain”; framed art & treasures for the Boutique; craft & knitting supplies; holiday decorations & toys; housewares - glassware, fine and everyday china, kitchen pots & pans etc); linens; vintage items - hats, purses, scarves & gloves and dolls & doll houses with furniture; shoes & boots in good condition.

Electrical items in working order are in great demand: coffee pots, tea kettles, crock pots, blenders, toaster ovens & electric griddles; lamps; sewing machines; holiday decorations with lights in working order; small TVs.
