Dear Trinity Church, During my Clinical Pastoral Education program at Penn Medicine Princeton Health, I frequently encountered both profound suffering and inexhaustible hope. CPE tested my pastoral and theological convictions in ways that left me tired and uncomfortable. I suspect that my discomfort emerged from that tense relationship between suffering and hope, uncovering vulnerabilities that frequently call our personal stories into question. Yet that very vulnerability, with God’s help, empowers us to address present challenges while dreaming of a kinder future. This is no easy task; our personal stories protect us from a world that is sadly indifferent to vulnerability. We saturate our lives with the very things that protect us from acknowledging our own vulnerabilities. We even convince ourselves that we can navigate this good, but sin-sick world on our own. Yet there are few places more vulnerable than in the hospital; patients cannot work, nor can they participate in the activities that give them joy and satisfaction. They surrender their agency to a bevy of medical professionals, hoping for satisfactory outcomes. The stories that have heretofore protected them can no longer do so. These stories must therefore be transformed by a power greater than human telling. God, through God’s grace, invites us to a sacred vulnerability that acknowledges both our suffering and our hopes. God sifts through our performative stories and sees us as we truly are. This will inevitably cause a mite of discomfort. But take heart; we have faith that God gloriously transforms the things we cannot understand into things beyond our wildest imagining. And so, as I finish my CPE program, I commend this simple prayer to you: Gentle Jesus, though we are not worthy to have you come under our roof, you are God’s word of healing to us. Be with us now, that we may know your presence in one another and rise up in joy to greet you. Grant this for your love’s sake. Amen. I’ll see you in church, Deacon Greg Geehern |
