Hosting the Hymn Society at Trinity!

Earlier this week, the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada met at Princeton Seminary, with several sessions taking place at Trinity. Dr. Meg Harper led a workshop on singing the Psalms in the Anglican tradition, with the assistance of some intrepid members of Trinity’s choir. Special thanks to Evalyn Cogswell of All Saints’ Scotch Plains who accompanied the Psalms on the organ!

Neighbors Everywhere

Dear friends,

I returned from Vancouver on Monday, having made many new friends as well as connected again with old friends. (Here I am with Joanna, a postulant in the Community of the Good Shepherd, who lives and studies in Vancouver). As part of my lectures last week, I talked about what I think are two central questions from Scripture for Christian moral theology:

Luke 10:25-29 (The Good Samaritan): And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.” But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Matthew 13:16-20 (The Confession of Peter): Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Who is my neighbor? And who do I say that Jesus is? If Jesus isn’t the Son of God, then anything he says about loving my neighbor is a good idea, not a commandment. It’s a bumper sticker slogan and not much more. But because he is fully God as well as fully human, how he tells us to love and the way he shows us what love looks like have moral force. “Love one another as I have loved you,” we hear Jesus say to his disciples every Maundy Thursday, knowing that this is a call to cross-shaped love, and cross-shaped lives.

What’s more, Jesus shows us how expansive the category of neighbor truly is. Kierkegaard says that the neighbor is the next person I meet, that the neighbor could be anyone. And here, the question is not so much about parsing out who counts as a neighbor and who does not, but rather on being a neighbor to others. Remember that in Luke 10:36, Jesus doesn’t ask the young lawyer if the man on the side of the road counted as a neighbor to be loved and cared for. Instead, he asks, “Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”

Our neighbors are all around us, both near and far. How will Jesus call you to love them this week?
