I recently was in Manhattan to see the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.” The play stars Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf. It was a riveting, spellbinding theatrical experience. When you come into the theatre, there is no curtain. You see the stage in all its plain rawness. As the play begins, a garage door goes up, headlights appear, and a car is driven onto the stage. The car door opens and out steps Willy Lowman: hunched over, looking tired and defeated. He gets his well-worn suitcase out of the car and wanders around the house. A well-known scene is when Linda, Willy’s wife, is reprimanding their two sons for not respecting their father. In her anger, she tells them, “Attention must be paid.” This phrase appears in big, bold letters over the front of the theatre where the play is performed. ATTENTION MUST BE PAID. When we pay attention to someone, we acknowledge who they are, we are aware of their personhood. When we pay attention to someone, we are showing him or her respect. A quote attributed to Elie Wiesel states: “The opposite of love is not hate. It is indifference.” Indifference does not give attention or time or respect. Indifference says you do not exist. Jesus paid attention to those people who his society were indifferent to. Like Jesus, our faith calls us to pay attention. In our baptismal covenant we affirm that we will seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbor as ourselves. In other words, we will pay attention to all persons. We will see them as God sees them: God’s beloved. Simone Weil (1919 – 1943), the French philosopher, mystic, and activist stated that paying attention is the same as prayer. “Attention, taken to its highest degree is the same thing as prayer. It presupposes faith and love. Absolutely unmixed attention is prayer.” When we pay attention to another, to our world, to all that God has created, we are praying. In the end, it’s all about paying attention. In the end, it’s all about prayer. |

Mtr. Kara’s Big AdventureDear Friends, Just after church on Sunday the 12th, I will be leaving for a week to go to Vancouver for a series of speaking engagements. I was named as the 2026 Visiting Distinguished Scholar at Vancouver School of Theology, which is part of the University of British Columbia. As part of that role, I will be teaching a 5 day course on my book, The Fullness of Time: Jesus Christ, Science, and Modernity to a group of seminarians, primarily from the Anglican Church of Canada. I’ll also give a public lecture at St. Mary’s Kerrisdale on the Nicene Creed, as well as preach at Christ Church Cathedral. I am tremendously grateful to VST for this generous invitation, but I am more grateful to each one of you. When I go “on the road” for a theological engagement, I do so as the Associate Rector of Trinity Church, and I’m very careful to tell everyone that my “real job” is as a parish priest – your parish priest. I carry each one of you with me, and in particular what I have learned from you about what it means to be Christian. Theology isn’t a special activity that exists at a remove from the Church. It’s something that the Church does together, in service to God and in thanksgiving for what God has done for us in Jesus Christ.
